When writing articles, be sure to add the occational link to pages in your blog/site using anchor text.    If you have someone willing to give you a link from their site, be sure and request anchor text.  Preferably something other than your domain name.  You will automatically be ranking for your sites name, so don’t waste a great link. Pick a phrase that you would like to rank for and make that your anchor text.

Go easy on your in-site linking.  Too many links will make your site look spammy and end up driving away potential customers.
